Black&White / Cernobila
Nurses and Nazis, syphilis and seduction: this experimental short doc delves into a scandalous urban legend from WWII Czechoslovakia. Basing itself on subjective interpretations, the film investigates how these stories evolve and affect our unconscious perceptions.

The film uses a combination of live action, animation and excerpts from cinema history.
The animated elements create an intimate portrait of a tragic figure. They deal less with the salacious elements of the story and instead imagine how these traumatic experiences could have affected her as an individual.

FEM 4

"In 2019, the themes of the contemporary art program of the Videokanava and the World of Tango Festival deal with feminism and feminity in concepts, thinking and action. Modern feminism does not only cover the gender issue but also a wider movement toward equality which questions all unequalizing hierarchies and classifications by ethnicity, social class, gender or age. Thus, the focus is not only on the power relations between men and women but on the power relations overall. It asks whether we can ever achieve equality without first recognizing all unequalizing forms of oppression."

RESOLUTION / KUMOUS
2018

Curators: Shubhangi Singh (IN), Taija Goldblatt (Fin), Onni Lillqvst (FIN)

“When the prevailing reality can no longer be excluded from the consciousness and when being passive is no longer an option, collective energy embodies a mass response that is directed towards action. Moment invites resistance and motion gathers movement. But can collective consciousness manufacture alliances? How can we redeem misplaced historical narratives? Can history speak for the present? Can it argue, quarrel, debate? Can it forgive?

The theme of the exhibition of Videokanava deals with revolution, civic activism and change through four different curators through their own and their chosen video works. Screenings with the same theme will be arranged in many cultural places in Tampere. The following screenings will be seen at Tampere's Cultural Center Laikku’s  and Tampere Art Museum’s yards between September 22.-29. In October-November, videos will be shown at Contemporary Art Center Hirvitalo in Pispala and in Vastavirta-Klubi in Tampere.

CURATOR'S INTRODUCTION

Shubhangi Singh (India)

“What does history of a place mean to a foreigner? What are the ways that one can perceive or engage with an unfamiliar land's past? What is the lens to view these multiple narratives with and what are the devices to further articulate them?
Given the landmark year we are in, through a section of the program, we would wish to open up these questions through the  discourse of Civil War, worker’s films, class disputes and other related themes that not only represent and commemorate but also question what it means for Finland to acknowledge 100 years of Civil War.

The idea of this program is to open up the conversation about class conflicts in many different ways through video works by artists within and outside of Finland (mainly the Indian subcontinent, Asia and Australia). By attempting to bring lesser narratives to the surface, the program seeks to facilitate a nourishing dialogue between communities making these inquires. Within this program at the festival, we look to contrast various class-related movements represented through an array of artistic mediums.”

Bio :
Shubhangi Singh’s practice as an visual artist and filmmaker investigates the entropic culture we currently exist in and attempts to observe the socio-political impact of the individual as a powerful influencing force.

Living between Mumbai and Sydney, Shubhangi often draws upon her personal experiences to question displacement and identity and, in the process, extend the discourse into public spheres. Singh attempts to consistently consolidate her formal training in films with her current practice to continually create and collaborate. Her works include documentaries, video poetry, community projects, sound pieces, sketches and video installations. She is interested in archives, folktales and the vague blurring between fact and fiction.

Onni Lillqvist (Finland)
“Elämme maailmassa ja todellisuudessa, jonka rakenteiden on muututtava! Ihminen on kehityshistoriansa tässä vaiheessa ajautunut ajatustottumuksiin, jotka pahimmillaan voivat uhata elämän jatkumista biosfäärissämme: kuluttaminen, kilpailu, omaan napaan tuijottaminen, muiden niskanpäälle kiipeäminen, sota, xenofobia, heikompien kustannuksella menestyminen, kylmyys, tunteettomuus, luonnon ja muiden elämänmuotojen hyväksikäyttö ja niin edelleen.

Monista kansalaisliikkeistä kumpuaa ymmärrettävä halu ratkaisuihin. Vanhat, jähmettyneet  instituutiot eivät välttämättä pysty antamaan tyydyttäviä vastauksia. Ihmiset ottavat enemmän ja enemmän ohjaksia omiin käsiinsä. Valitettavasti joillakin keittää yli ja lopputuloksena on ihmisvihaa ja ääriajattelua. Jostain sekin kertoo: hädästä, pahasta olosta ja ratkaisun tarpeesta. Muutosta on tarpeen, sitä ei voi pysäyttää.

Haluan tuoda Videokanavan näytökseen muun muassa erään dokumentin nimeltään Freedom in the Dark. Se käsittelee death metal skeneä Botswanassa. Elokuvassa seurataan genren yhtä tunnetuinta edustajaa, jonka bändi järjestää jokavuotisia metallifestivaaleja, joiden tuotto menee köyhyyden poistoon, orpokoteihin, päihdehuoltoon ja aidsin vastaiseen toimintaan.”

BORDERS
text by Sepideh Rahaa

"What does it mean when we talk about “boundaries” today?

The theme “Borders” refers to either physical territorial boundary such as geographical landmarks or to metaphysical symbolic and social boundaries which individuals and groups create for themselves or others in order to survive the condition. While communication and knowledge, migration and prompt changes in global economy have all changed the perception of borders and boundaries, the instability of these concepts directly affects the definition of personal identity and extend into the personal and psychological mental sphere.

This year with the theme “borders” Videokanava encourages media artists to rethink and reconsider the notion of personal or global boundaries, where the concepts such as geographical borders, the nation and its borders strongly exist and there is a return to new forms of nationalism. But certainly the ones who react to these concepts they create a new way of life and shape their new identity.

The festival will focus on the concept of “Borders” not just in the physical term but also between man’s body and mind in relation to the other, to the community or to the world. The question “how people live the borders while their lives, attitudes and behavior are shaped by them or how they break them” is essential to this theme. The festival aims to encourage media artists to discover the interpretations of borders between visible and invisible in the society. Artists are invited to present their video works on the theme reflecting different approaches and ways of perceiving."

Sepideh Rahaa (1981, Iran) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Helsinki and her works are reflection of an individual’s presence upon time and conflict within the society, an exploration of challenging concepts related to socio-political context. She uses different media such as video, performance art, poetry and photography to convey the contemporary critical issues twisted with people's lives.

Videokanava and a group of actors from cultural scene organize an experimental cultural event 16-18 October at Yellow House as a part of the OFF Triennial of the 6th Triennial of Pirkanmaa. The Kanavalla event combines various art forms and assembles artists from different fields of art to work together, and presents innovative and modern urban art.

To find out more, visit the Facebook event by clicking on the poster above or here.

The theme of the exhibition

"For the next exhibition Videokanava is searching for artworks that discuss the concept of home at large scale. Besides a roof and walls, home can represent almost anything: language, a community, a city, a place-based identity or even a brief period of time. Home can be shared or private, but rarely it is open for everyone. The concept of home is also closely related to the feelings of otherness and alienation, which seem to stay relevant subjects in our reality."
-Martta Tuomaala

Videokanava and curator Martta Tuomaala aim to present an exhibition, which deals with the theme of home diversely without forgetting social criticism.

GALLERY 22RUEMULLER, PARIS, FRANCE

FASHION & BODY PRESENCE EXHIBITION

In the 22RUEMULLER gallery, Videokanava will show a selection of Finnish artists´ videos based on the idea of Fashion & Body presence.

"Our fetishes are embodied by name brands that become the essence of the connection between signifier and the signified, they cover up our bodies as a second skin. The garment acts like a canvas that generates a specific style, a singular ergonomic Self. Considering garment as flesh, the artists responded to these video projections with a collective sculpture that evokes the body as a canvas. Creating a generic brand, they played with the idea of a post human skin made of melted plastic and DIY painted patterns."
